Snow Day!

Today was the first day the snow fell here in the Northland, and boy did it make a grand entrance!

On Wednesday some mommy friends and I took our kids to the zoo. It was 68 degrees outside and we found our light jackets to be too warm.

Today this is what our backyard looked like:

CRAZINESS!

We had a great snow day! We had absolutely no plans for the day, so instead of being thrown for a loop by the snow, we were able to simply stay home and enjoy a cozy day together. We read books, baked cookies, took naps (mine was perhaps a bit too long :)) and I made lasagna in the crockpot for dinner (a recipe which I will share in a subsequent blog-post).

And…of course, we got bundled up…

…and spent some time playing in the glorious white stuff outside. Daddy & W built a snowman, which W named “Na-Na”.  (S & I watched from the sidelines (actually, she spent most of our time outside trying to understand why we couldn’t play with the tricycle or sidewalk chalk :)), but she wanted in on the picture, too :)).

What a great day!

How did you spend your snow day?

Wordless Wednesday

It’s a Girl!

Well, we had our ultrasound on Friday afternoon, and were delighted to find out that we are expecting another little girl:

Norah!

Here she is:

As you can see in the second picture, she decided to start sucking her thumb while we were watching her. It was a truly amazing ultrasound…I could’ve sat & watched her all day!

We are so excited to meet her!!!

Favorite Things Cake

W’s birthday is coming up next week, and we have a little family party planned for Saturday night.

Now I am big on the “theming” part of my kids parties. I love coming up with a theme and creative ideas to use for my kids’ parties — particularly for the cake. Two years ago we had a puppy dog party…last year it was Cars (the movie)…and S’s last birthday party had a garden theme.

So naturally, this year I expected to have another single theme. I wondered what it would be. I thought about what W has been into lately. Farm animals? Toy Story? Legos? Lots of elaborate ideas came to mind. Then I asked W what he wanted to be on his cake.

Well, he wants a favorite things cake — that is, a cake featuring elements of several of his favorite things.

So much for my single-theme plan!

He’s been pretty insistent that this is what he wants, though, so I am rising up to the challenge (er, trying to at least!).

So tonight I decided to ask him what exactly he would like on his “Favorite Things” cake. Here is the list we came up with:

  • Crayons
  • Toy Story
  • Cars
  • Farm Animals
  • Star Wars
  • Legos
  • Waffles
  • Paper Towels
  • Napkins
  • Thomas the Tank Engine
  • Chips
  • Apple Juice
  • Mater (*made out of chocolate)
  • Fire Engine

Hmmm. I truly do have a challenge ahead of me. We shall see how this goes…yikes.

(and yes, he was pretty insistent about the “paper towels” and “napkins” thing. It’s actually not the first time he’s mentioned them when I asked what he wanted on his favorite things cake…so I guess we’ll keep ’em…?)

Ay-yay-yay…. 🙂

Dancing

OK, I have lots to be working on right now. But I couldn’t resist posting this scene from earlier today.

It happened while I was making dinner in the kitchen. S was playing near me, and W came up to her and asked her to come dance with him in the living room. She went with him, and after giving them about 30 seconds I decided I should probably grab my camera and peek around the corner to see what was happening in the living room.

This is what I saw:

and then this:

and then (brace yourselves for cuteness) this:

(which, I might add, happened with NO PROMPTING from mommy!)

Of course, lest you think that it was all sweetness and gentleness, this video will show you what it was really like. 🙂 Still, their love for each other was evident, which is such a blessing to this mommy’s heart!!!

The Birthday Party Post

(Please Note: All the good photos in this blog post were taken by my sister. Yes, that’s right, all the good photos. The rest were taken by me. Once you see them I think it will be fairly clear which is which. :))

Baby S turned 1 a couple of weeks ago, so it was time to par-tay! We invited the grandparents, aunts & uncles over and had a fun evening.

I decided on a “flower/garden” theme for the party. I’d originally envisioned a room decorated with tons of homemade tissue paper flowers like these ones from Badgers On the Loose, and a cupcake stand full of beautifully decorated pastel cupcakes much like the ones on the front of my Magnolia Bakery cookbook:

(except with some cute little candy flowers kind of like the ones on the cupcakes pictured here. )

Alas, reality hit. The party ended up coming at the tail end of a crazy week, and, long story short, I ended up with only 4 hours free before the party to prepare dinner, bake the cupcakes, decorate the cupcakes, and decorate. And clean. So…with all of the craziness, the paper flowers ended up becoming an activity for the guests (which they did a better job with than I would have, anyway :)) :

…and the cupcakes ended up looking a little gloppy since I decorated them all in, like, 5 minutes…

…but we still had a lovely time celebrating the most important part of the event: sweet baby S!

(OH! And I should tell you about the cake. Did you know that Lunds offers free first birthday cakes? We got one and used it as S’s own personal cake to destroy (though, I admit, I snuck a piece or two from the untouched side of it…once the party was over, of course :)). Anyway, they are beautifully decorated, custom ordered, and absolutely delicious! All you need to do is bring your baby’s birth certificate in to the bakery to prove your babies birthdate, and you are all set to order! Quite a deal that I would highly recommend.)

Anyway, all in all a great time…though I’m still working on accepting the fact that my baby is 1!!!

Resurfacing

Hi? Remember me?

Anyone still here? Testing 1-2-3…?

Returning to blogging after long stretches of absence is always awkward. I’ll do it simply by offering the short version of my summer — the lowlight and two (very precious) highlights:

The lowlight was the illness and subsequent loss of my sweet grandma in July. It was so hard to say goodbye. She was a precious, special lady who we miss dearly and can’t wait to meet in heaven again.

The highlights were our two precious little ones. I can’t believe how fast they are growing — and how busy they are keeping me. W just turned 2 last week and is very much…2! Suddenly he’s speaking in full sentences and even coming up with witty little comments!

S is almost 6 months old and is a dark haired, brown eyed beauty with chunky little legs and sweet little dimples. I defy anyone to resist the cuteness of her puppy dog eyes — especially when she smiles! She is a doll (if I do say so myself).

Needless to say, 2 kids under 2 keep me very busy, so while I will continue blogging from time to time, from here on out they may be rather short.

I will leave you with 2 videos of my TTT’s (Two Tiny Tots):
